About Us

Garreth Stockton MIA

I tried many sports before I was introduced to climbing, and the switch was instant for me. The personal challenge, the environment we climb in and the characters. I have now been climbing for over 25 years. My mission statement of “get good quickly, and be safe in the mountains” reflects my own development as a climber. In my late 20’s  I became involved in training, bouldering and sports climbing and my grades rocketed, not only on bolts and pads, but in the mountains too. As Steve McClure once said ‘the way to improve your traditional climbing is to get strong on sports routes’, that then gives you the confidence that an E3 is actually a F6c sport route with a V3/4 boulder problem..

Does it help to be a good climber to be a good coach? I think so, having completed dozens of routes above F7c, and several F8’s, coupled with a huge range of boulders above V6 and up to V9, this experience and movement over rock, has given me a huge repertoire of skills to fall back on (see 8a.nu ranking).  I still climb at F7c and boulder at V6 or better – I just love it! If you have aspiration or revere grades too much or simply want to break through a barrier then get in touch.

That all said, I don’t prefer one aspect of climbing any more than any other aspect, I just love it all. As an MIA (Mountain Instructor Award) I am able to deliver all aspects of British summer mountaineering from teaching multi-pitch climbing, to scrambling, navigation and improvised rescue. I have climbed all over the UK, and visited some stunning locations from the Glen Etive slabs of Scotland to the rugged beauty of the Lake District and Snowdonia. Furthermore, I have visited Fontainebleau more times than I can remember, and worked and lived overseas in Qatar and Spain.

I became a Mountaineering Instructor because I couldn’t always give back to this amazing community everything I have learned. For me this is the reward.  When I’m not in the mountains I’m a school teacher, which also gives me a beneficial and altogether different skill : patient encouragement, reassurance and great advice, this is what is reflected in the feedback we receive at G2Adventure. If this philosophy sounds interesting then get in touch.

William Tranter MLs, RCI and Kayak and Canoe Coach

Will’s passion for the outdoors started at the age of 13 after taking part in a weekend of kayaking. Will moved to Ambleside to complete a BA Hons in Outdoor Leadership. He used his time and location at university to its full potential, climbing and paddling all over the Lake District and further afield.

Will is qualified as a paddle sports coach through British Canoeing. He holds the UKCC Level 2 Coach Award along the Moderate Water Endorsements in Sea Kayak, Whitewater and Canoe, on top of this he also holds the 5 star award in both Canoe and Sea kayak. My drive for paddling comes from discovering exciting new places and meeting other enthusiastic people who share my passion. I relish the opportunity to coach and guide others to aid their progression into the sport. I can often be found on the rivers of South Lakes or sea kayaking on Scotland’s west coast, I hope to see you on the water one day!

Testimonials…

Alex Monnington, Mountain Leader refresher
Just spent the weekend doing an ML refresher training with Gareth. What an absolutely amazing experience! Learnt so much from Gareth. He is friendly, approachable and despite me struggling with contour interpretation and rope work he had a lot of patience and simplified his explanations in a way that was easy for me to digest. Gareth’s training really made a lot of things that I previously struggled with, suddenly click! Not only did I learn a lot, he taught in such a way that it was actually incredibly enjoyable, despite it being a training. Thank you again Gareth. Definitely one of the best instructors out there!

Me and my girlfriend had a chance to spend two days with Garreth in May 2018 in Snowdonia as part of a trad climbing course and it was an amazing experience. Garreth is a patient teacher as well as a very pleasant companion so we had a great time together. We were not entirely new to climbing but we learned a lot. Many thanks, Garreth, we can only recommend you.

An outstanding instructor who will ensure a fun learning experience in a safe environment.
Mark Pollitt, Climbing wall Award training

We had a great weekend with Gareth in Wales and feel confident with what we have learned during the course. Garreth was very responsive with route choices to suite our skill levels and the weather. He kept it interesting and challenging but at the same time nicely balanced. After the course he was happy to answer any questions and give advice on gear crags etching. 100% recommended!

I had a great day out at Symonds Yat with Garreth on a trad climbing course. I had no previous experience of climbing outdoors but by the end of the day I had completed my first lead climb! I was absolutely thrilled, I would definitely recommend Garreth as an instructor. He answered all of my questions and filled me with confidence to complete my first climb.

Thanks to Garreth Stockton @G2Adventure for some super days out nav training. I wouldn’t have got this far if it weren’t for you, after my last course I was so low and when we went out the missing parts of the puzzle fitted. If I hadn’t have gone out with you I’m not sure my assessment outcome would have been as positive. I passed.
